USAT-Midatlantic Duathlon Series Rules and Scoring:
All races must be USAT sanctioned. Failure to sanction a race will result in the race being pulled from the series.

Any annual USAT member may participate in the races in the series, however, only USAT annual members from the Midatlantic Region (USAT-MA) are eligible for their points counting toward a final series ranking.
Note: In order to receive series points for a given race an athlete must be a USAT annual member at the time of the race. If you become a USAT member during the series races before you become a member -- events raced prior to receiving USAT membership will not count in the series point scoring.

Scoring will be done based on the USAT National age group rankings procedures.

The Regional Series Championship race will be worth the same number of pts (will also count as the tie breaker race), but will only count as completing 1 race . This race will have special prizes/awards TBD.

You must finish 3 races to be eligible for awards.

Your best 5 scores will be counted. If you finish more than 5 races your lowest scores will be dropped.

The M/F individuals with the top 3 Overall highest scores will be declared 1st, 2nd and 3rd Overall
in the series.

The M/F 40 and over with the highest score will be declared the Overall Master winners.

The M/F 50 and over with the highest score will be declared the Overall Grandmasters winners.

The M/F 19 and under with the highest score will be declared the Overall Junior winner.

The top score in each age group 19 & under to 80 and over in 5 yr increments.

No double dipping is allowed. You can not win an Overall or Masters or Grandmasters award and an Age Group award.

If a masters or grandmasters athlete finishes in the top 3 overall he/she must decide if they want the overall award or the masters/grandmasters title. You are not eligible to win more than 1 overall award.

Your age group is based on your age as of Dec. 31, 2007. This is the same procedure USAT uses for Nationals rankings.

Since this series is using the USAT national age group ranking procedures, only age group athletes are eligible for points or series awards.

If there is a tie in points the person with the most points at the series championship race will be declared the winner. If there still is a tie the person with the most points at the regional championship race will be declared the winner. If there still is a tie after this the USAT-MA duathlon committee will make the final decision on declaring the winner.

Decisions of the USAT Mid-Atlantic Region Duathlon Series Committee are final.

Top 10 Reasons to Du a Duathlon

By Judi Carbary, Du2R Multisport Racing Team, Certified Triathlon Coach, Chairperson,
USAT-MA Regional Duathlon Committee

What do we need to do to stimulate interest in the sport of duathlon? What makes triathlons so popular? Should we just stand back and let duathlon fade away?

With the waning participation in duathlon races, many race directors are questioning, "Why should we bother to put on duathlon races with so little interest compared with the overwhelming popularity of triathlons?"

Here our my top 10 reasons to du a duathlon:

10. You can tell everyone the answer to the questions:

A. What is a duathlon?

B. Why would anyone ever want to run twice?

9. You only have to train for 2 sports instead of 3.

8. It will improve your run/bike performance for triathlons.

7. It’s easier to enter duathlon races and you can enter later reducing your chances of wasting an entry fee.

6. Entry fees usually cost less than triathlons.

5. It’s very competitive and challenging to run-bike and then run again.

4. It’s easier to find a hotel when you travel to a race.

3. It increases your chances to qualify for world championships.

2. You can do duathlons from early spring through the fall.

1. You don’t have to know how to swim!! You don't need to buy a wetsuit! You don't need to find/join a pool! While having duathlon races available are important, getting people to participate is the next critical step. Writing articles, advertising, giving presentations at athletic conferences, offering prize money, and awards may not be enough. We need a stronger voice in USAT and the National Duathlon Commission. We need YOU and your energetic voice and ideas!

Maybe we need YOU to "Just Du It"

Please give me your ideas at: jcarbary@usat-ma.org
